Is there any treatment for idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP)?

My 42 years old diabetic mother is suffering from serious idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) case and her platelets counts is 4000. She is being hospitalised for the last month. She has taken three doses of Reditux 600 mg but only first dose worked. She had the same problem 10 years back but that time she recovered by the transfusion of blood. What should we do now? Please advise.

Your mother is suffering from Relapsed chronic ITP as per history given. The treatment options are:

  1. - High dose steroids - will need insulin to control sugar
  2. – Splenectomy
  3. – Danazole and Dapsone
  4. – Azathioprine
  5. – Rituximab
  6. – Vincristine

You need to consult a haematologist and the treatment will be done according to patient’s condition.
